low budget make up

Does anyone know of any ways of making low budget prosthetics, or face pieces. I am thinking of doing an alien abduction movie, and most of the shots of the aliens are going to be done with the lighting, but at the end I want a close up of one of them. I thought about going to a costume shop and buying masks and cutting them up and doing make up over them. Anyone know of any moldable foams or anything like that. What about all you guys that love zombie movies?

Hi scarlett if you can be a bit more specific , then might be able to provide you with some help.

Latex isnt as expensive as you think and you can use a lot of what you probably have around the house to create all sorts of effects.

try and describe your alien and ill give you some tips

yep, latex is the stuff to use!
Give some more details, and I may be able to help.
You can buy a good sized bottle of latex for a tenner.

It depends how much work you want to do, but you can make sculptures from plasticene, make a plaster of paris mould (costs about a fiver) and then scoop out the plasticene, pour in latex and leave to dry.
Then attach to the actors face, using more latex if you/they are brave.
Quite often you dont even need to paint it, it comes out a very fleshy/translucent colour.

buy yourself a couple of cheap and crappy masks then add loads of stuff to them for that personal alien touch that would save you a lot of moulding bother

p.s a great way of producing slime is to cover the area to be slimed with gloss varnish

Well I don?t have any real concrete ideas on the way I want it to look just yet. I was thinking of something very translucent that you can see blood vessels under, and other fleshy spots. I am an art school student and a fairly good sculptor. I have also done plaster bandage body casts, so I kind of know what to suspect. The other thing is safety. I know some latex materials are very hazardous, especially when inhaled. Could anyone help me out there, I don?t really feel like dying quite yet.

Which as far as I know/can tell gives off no fumes - smells a bit ammonia like, buts its harmless in a ventilated space.

Any arts suppliers will be able to get it. Its great stuff, once you've used it you'll use it again and again for everything!

attacahed to actor with latex and build up over with latex and make up
